CDL TRUCK DRIVER & OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR

JOB DESCRIPTION
 
An Operations Supervisor is responsible for supervising day to day collection activities in one or more lines of business (rear load, front load, commercial, residential, industrial roll-off, semi and/or container delivery and pick-up) in a geographically dispersed area. Supervisors in this position lead operations of all routes under their supervision. Responsibilities include managing driver/laborer performance, maintaining schedules and managing daily route tasks. Supervisors also ensure work environments are in compliance with all safety guidelines, initiate best practices for productivity and resolve any route issues. Our Supervisors must be an example of West Central Sanitation’s “Good Neighbor” service and standards to WCS co-workers as well as to the public, industry partners and WCS customers. Most importantly, our supervisors keep drivers and customers happy! Our supervisors are the backbone of our operation and motivate our team to grow and succeed. WAGE RANGE: $69K - $80K PER YEAR (depending upon experience)          LOCATION: WILLMAR
OPENING DATE: OPEN UNTIL FILLED                                                            JOB TYPE: FULL TIME     
SCHEDULE: SHIFTS BEGIN 4:00 AM – 6:00 AM TYPICALLY MONDAY - FRIDAY
                         SHIFT LENGTH VARIES BY ROUTES AND DAY

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the United States
  • Must successfully complete and pass applicable pre-employment background check, driving record, physical and drug screening
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements and demands of the position
 EDUCATION 
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • 2-year Degree is required 
EXPERIENCE 
  • 18 months or more of relevant work experience in transportation, driving or logistics is preferred
  • 5 years of management experience supervising 10+ employees in labor or commercial driving is preferred
  • OR an equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered adequate

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
GENERAL
  • Participate in direct field time with employees, by riding along on routes and assisting them in their development as a WCS employee, supporting them in becoming a Good Neighbor through proactive coaching and mentoring
  • Work with Operations and General Supervisors to implement initiatives aimed at improving functional excellence for the company as a whole 
  • Ensure adherence to accident prevention programs and compliance with all safety, environmental, operating, regulatory, accounting, ethics, and other standards amid direct reports and the company as a whole
  • Respond to customer needs and demands as presented by the Customer Service department
  • Monitor route analysis and review them for efficiency and optimal routing
  • Interview and hire workers in conjunction with the Human Resources department
  • Organize and schedule all necessary resources required to accomplish daily activities and coordinate daily operational needs with their team
  • Plan, distribute, monitor, and follow-up on daily route assignments to ensure customers are serviced per company standards and agreements
  • Manage the end-of-day check-in process; capture and communicate key service, safety, and equipment issues
  • Monitor driver and laborer time and attendance, minimizing overtime while ensuring that drivers do not exceed limits established by regulatory agencies (e.g., 60-hour rule)
  • Review weekly demand / volume per route, determine potential gains from re-routing and recommend re-routes to the routing specialist
  • Set and monitor productivity, service, and safety targets for each route and driver
  • Assist with data collection and required reporting
  • Work with functional groups to resolve employee relations and labor relations issues
  • Ensure that drivers comply with physicals, drug or alcohol tests, and training required by regulatory agencies
  • Conduct investigations regarding all injuries and incidents, ensure consistent safety monitoring, discipline, and retrain when opportunities present
  • Visit customers and customer sites to evaluate and resolve safety issues; seek service alternatives where appropriate
  • Establish and maintain a clean, safe work environment in compliance with Company/Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards
  • Document service issue solutions and provide instructions to Dispatch/Customer Service should problems reoccur
  • Communicate and follow-up on sales opportunities, issues at customer sites, Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) repairs, container swaps, and safety issues reported by drivers
  • Notify Dispatch/Customer Service of container delivery days in specific areas
  • Ensure service set-up errors and missed pickups are reported and resolved
  • Document and maintain records required by regulatory agencies such as the Department of Transportation (DOT)
  • Review and audit documentation on a daily basis related to route operations (e.g., DVIR’s, driver time and attendance tracking, open tickets, etc.) and follow-up where appropriate
  • May be required to operate a truck in accordance within WCS Safety, OSHA (Occupational and Safety Health Act) and DOT (Department of Transportation) requirements as well as all local, state and federal laws
  • May be required to complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the truck and document those checks using the standard DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report)
  • Immediately report all unsafe situations or service-related issues to your Supervisor or Dispatch
  • Attend and direct training programs, briefings, and meetings as required by WCS or as directed by your Supervisor
  • Communicate customer requests to your Supervisor or Dispatch
  • May be required to completely dump all receptacles and leave each customer’s location clean and free of debris
  • May be required to follow all route assignments and complete end-of-day documentation / check out process
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and multitask
  • Ability to problem solve, prioritize tasks, and manage time well
  • Ability to work with and support co-workers and team members
  • Ability to complete tasks with accuracy and attention to detail
  • Willingness to work extra time and/or do extra tasks on certain days as needed
  • Perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures
  • Complete other job-related duties as assigned or apparent
PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THIS POSITION 
  • Ability to safely lift objects weighing 50 pounds
  • Ability to safely push, pull, bend, twist, sit, stand, and frequently lift objects up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift objects up to 100 pounds
  • Ability to use motor coordination with finger dexterity (such as keyboarding, machine operation, etc.)
  • Ability to hear at a level sufficient to communicate effectively with others

WORK ENVIRONMENT 
  • Outdoors and/or driving a video/GPS monitored vehicle – environments may often include dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes and elements for most of the work day
  • Indoors – office setting
  • May rarely be exposed to physical occupational risks including cuts, burns, exposure to toxic chemicals, etc. 
ABILITY TO COMMUTE / RELOCATE 
  • Must reliably commute to the designated work location. May also relocate before beginning employment 
REQUIRED TRAINING 
  • As assigned or apparent 
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, OR REGISTRATIONS 
  • Ability to provide a current Class D Minnesota Driver’s License
  • Ability to provide or acquire a current Class A or Class B Minnesota CDL (Commercial Drivers’ License) with an air-brake endorsement or permit
  • Ability to provide or obtain a current valid health card 
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 
  • Team of approximately 20 drivers
