Public Warned of Widespread Bank Text Message Scam
Willmar, Minnesota – September 15, 2025 – Financial institutions are issuing a public service announcement regarding a widespread text message scam targeting banking customers across the country. The sophisticated scheme aims to steal personal and financial information by impersonating bank security departments.
The scam begins when individuals receive a text message warning of a “new login” to their bank account. The message then prompts the recipient to reply “STOP” to dispute the unauthorized activity. This tactic allows fraudsters to identify active phone numbers and potential targets for the second phase of their attack.
After a person replies to the text, they receive a fraudulent phone call from someone claiming to be a bank representative. The scammer, using a tone of urgency, then attempts to extract sensitive information such as account numbers, online banking passwords, or other personal identifiers under the guise of securing the account.
All consumers should be aware that legitimate financial institutions will never initiate contact to ask for confidential information like passwords, PINs, or full Social Security numbers via text message or an unsolicited phone call.
"Vigilance is our strongest defense against these types of widespread scams," said Kelly Pickle of Heritage Bank NA, Director of Enterprise Risk. "These criminals rely on creating a sense of panic. We urge everyone to independently verify any security alert by contacting their bank through official, trusted channels, never through links or numbers provided in a suspicious message. Reporting these attempts helps authorities and institutions track and combat these criminal networks."
Anyone who receives a suspicious text message is advised to delete it immediately and not respond. If you have already replied or provided any information, you should contact your financial institution directly using the phone number on the back of your debit card or on their official website to report the incident and protect your accounts.
