Join Our Team as a Hydraulics Technician – 

Are you passionate about protecting Minnesota’s roads, waterways, and communities? MnDOT is looking for a dedicated and driven Hydraulics Technician to play a vital role in designing and maintaining drainage systems that safeguard our transportation infrastructure.

In this role, you’ll inspect culverts, ditches, and stormwater systems, respond to emergency drainage issues, and perform hydraulic analysis to ensure our roads stand strong against Minnesota’s toughest weather. You’ll use cutting-edge GIS tools and GPS technology to guide project planning, permitting, and compliance – and help us meet critical environmental and safety standards like the NPDES and MS4.

As part of our team, you’ll:

  • Lead on-site inspections and data collection for scoping and design.
  • Analyze drainage areas and design systems that reduce flood and erosion risks.
  • Collaborate across agencies to meet state and federal environmental regulations.
  • Train others on GPS-based MS4 inspections and database systems.
  • Develop erosion control and stormwater prevention plans that make a lasting impact

Minimum Qualifications

This position is posted at two level (classifications) 

The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Generalist Senior level can be achieved with:
  • Two years of experience performing hydraulic activities that included utilizing computer-aided drafting and design (CADD);
OR
  • One year of experience performing hydraulic activities and a combination of one year of experience performing design, pre-design, roadway and/or bridge construction, and/or surveys.  The two years of experience must have included utilizing computer-aided drafting and design (CADD).
  • Note:  A Two year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four year degrees: Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics; or equivalent may substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).
  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
  • A valid MN Class “D” Driver’s license

The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Generalist level can be achieved with:
  • One (1) year of experience in a combination of any of the TSS functional areas (e.g., design, pre-design, contract administration, surveys, hydraulics etc.) of which at least six months included utilizing computer-aided drafting and design (CADD);
OR
  • Note:  A Two year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four year degrees: Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics; or equivalent may substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).
  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
